Best Curl Activator For 4C Hair (2025 Update) - Pubbelly (2025)

I received this in one of my recent boxes and was excited to give it a try, mainly because I have been trying a lot of different curl remedies and find many of them to be too greasy, have too much perfume, or leaves my hair feeling sticky. I used this as suggested and sectioned my hair and applied it from root to end and let me hair air dry. My curls feel soft (not crunchy), not greasy and not sticky either. Overall, I this may be my favorite curl activator I have used to date. My curls didn’t shrink up past my shoulders and they weren’t full of greasy residue. My curls did feel heavier but not overwhelmingly heavy and they didn’t shrink as much as they usually do. I think depending on your hair type this could be too heavy for finer hair or finer curls. I plan to continue using this for a while! It honestly smells really great!tierra.w

I have never tried a product like this. It is kind of pasty which was surprising; Activator made me think it would be watery but it was thick, similar to a gel. I followed the instructions and evenly distributed it through my detangled hair (after using the shampoo and conditioner from the same product line). My hair felt sticky at first, I was afraid it was going to look limp. I allowed my hair to air dry overnight (did not tie it up). The next morning I simply fluffed my hair with my fingers and was surprised that my curls appeared shiny, moisturized and had a wet look, but the curls were actually dry to touch. Interesting 🧐😁. The activator gives the same look that a messy wet spray activator gives without the mess. I never use activator because I don’t like my hair to be perpetually wet. But this is a product I will likely continue to use because it is mess free. The Creme of Nature Pure Honey Shrinkage Defense Curl Activator pairs well with the Creme of Nature Argon oil edge control because they both provide a similar shine. I think I’m in love 😍.

This product gives me all kinds of life honey 🍯. Never have i ever had this much curl definition without shrinkage. I am really surprised! I noticed when putting it on that it did something to make my hair lay down. I was concerned that there would be no hold and that I would wake up the next day and my hair would be smashed and messed up. To my surprise 3 days later my hair was still moisturized and defined at least in the front. I am an extremely heavy sleeper on the back of my head and having the back of my hair smashed gave me the opportunity to try the product on 2nd day hair. Needless to say it lived up to the hype. After applying only a little bit of water those curls were once again popping. I would not suggest refreshing without adding some moisture to the hair it cause the hair to be sticky.lashonda.p

What I will say about this product is that it does definitely leave my curls defined and very pretty for day 1 curls however it does need some type of hold to last multiple days. For me it works best when I pair it either with a gel or mousse I have from another brand. I don’t however like pairing it with the Mizani Miracle Milk Leave In because together it weighs my hair down and stretches my curls which I don’t usually like especially if it leaves my hair feeling unwashed or greasy. So I rather use the Mizani products I received separately. Of the three Mizani products I received I like the smell of this curl enhancer the most. Overall good product, just have to learn what works best for your hair when using them.evelina.b

Thank you influenster for giving me the opportunity to test this product. The mizani true textures curl enhancing lotion is amazing. It has Coconut Oil helping to enhance moisture and offers frizz control. Marula Oil Provides frizz control. And Olive Oil helping to Moisturize and add shine and softness. All these oil are amazing for the hair this curl lotion is more for the curly hair girls who like a more natural curl look. It doesn’t leave you with extremely tight curls. But nice soft looking curls. And that’s the look that I like. my sister loves tight curls. I say try this product out. Even if you’re not into the soft looking curls I say use it in conjunction with another curling cream just more added benefits. #TextureLoveamandaceli.s

I really like the lightweight feel of this curl lotion. There's so many out there that are heavy and make my curls weighed down. I put about 4-5 pumps in my hair for my long and thick curls and apply how I've been applying curl creme to my hair for 10+ years. With that being said, while I like the formula, I don't see any hydration or definition in the top part of my hair (maybe the first 4 inches from the roots) or the last part of my hair (the bottom 2-3 inches). It is flat and no matter how much I individually scrunch the lotion into my curls or finger comb it all through there, there hasn't been any improvement. The frizz on my hair hasn't been touched either by this formula. I take a lot of showers at night, so I would use this formula then, but if I took a morning shower and needed my hair to look it's best then I would not use this formula. I appreciate what this brand was trying to achieve, but maybe my curls are just too thick and dry for this type of formula.annalise.s

AG's Re:coil Activator does exactly what it says it will do! It activates my curls and keeps them constantly moisturized! Most of the time my hair does not know what it wants to do. One day it is really frizzy and wavy, then the next day it is almost completely flat, with no waves at all. Sadly, I can't "rock" that look; however, with AG's Re:coil Activator, my frizz disappears, I have amazing volume, and my natural waves are left soft and smelling good! Plus, it helps with curl retention, so when I am ready to go out, I curl my hair with a curling iron and I do not have to worry about my curls falling throughout the night! I do not have any cons/complaints about AG's Re:coil Activator and I recommend it to those who want amazing hair!Andrea

For years I used the same gel for my naturally curly hair before diffusing. I normally avoid curl creams because they don't seem to work as well for making defined curls. This cream seems different. To use, I apply to freshly shampooed hair which has been combed out and is still "drippy" with water. I use about a dime size amount on shoulder length hair. The product is thick so I rub it in my hands to emulsify before applying. Then scrunch and diffuse. It is a bit more expensive than my old gel. But i use half as much. What I like most about this product is that the scent isn't overwhelming (starts out smelling vanilla/marshmallow but it fades over time) and it doesn't weigh my hair down. A little goes a long way, making it more economical than Redken Curlwise (my second favorite). The store clerk told me to rub it between my hands to really emulsify it before scrunching my hair. When the amount in your hands is low, rub your hands together again and it's like it magically reappears. A little really does go a long way! My hair is thick, wavy and frizzy at times, so I like that I don't have to use a lot. With Redken, I have to use a LOT to get my desired style, so I'm glad I found this product.Tucson Mom

This is hands down the best curly hair gel on the market. I use 2-3 pumps for my whole head and scrunch it in after applying a leave in conditioner to very wet hair. It starts by drying hard but then as the day goes on, your hair looks and feels so soft and the curls are still in place. If i’m looking for a stronger hold because of a slick-back ponytail or something, I usually opt for a stronger gel like Not Your Mother’s. However, I still use Uncle Funky’s Daughter every single day and it’s been excellent for my 3b hair! And CGM approved!!! Worth every penny and lasts long.Natalie

I branched out a year ago to try new products for my wavy hair and I stumbled on this one. I wasn’t sure at first because it’s a weird texture. Kinda like a watery gel. I wasn’t 100% sure it would help my hair. Omg. I was so wrong to be skeptical. This stuff is in my everyday hair arsenal. I scrunch this into my wet hair after a shower. Sometimes it’s all I use and it leaves my hair soft and gently defined. If I want stronger definition, I add in Marc Anthony’s curly mousse right after this and scrunch it in with a t-shirt then let air dry. Once dry, I scrunch with my hands or a t-shirt to get the “crunch” out and my hair looks so good after. It holds the waves in nicely all day long and strong.kelly.w

Feels just like snot!! And gets the job DONE! So just so that you know, I’m a lazy 4C natural. Meaning I do bare minimum to maintain a few strands of hair on my non-chemically treated hair. I literally do not use styling products, partially out of laziness but even more so out of fear of breakage and dryness etc. I took a chance, and for the first tome in years, I tried a styling product, and this was it. It’s a gel with the exact consistency of snot. First wash your hair, condition, leave in condition or whatever, and then while your hair is still soaking wet, apply a GENEROUS amount. Finger detangle/shingle/whatever you to that usually gets a little more definition in your hair and boom. Soft not crunchy curls. Such an amazing hold without feeling like your hair is going to fall out. No flaking. When I tell you I’m the perfect guinea pig for stuff like this because I am truly so prone to messing stuff up..GIRL. Listen to me. So far I have only tested this on dry hair and when I wasn't going out. It gave me instant curl boost. It's only the start of September so too warm & humid outside and would result in fallen out curls for me, smooth and wavy is what happens in summer. Glycerin is second on the ingredients list. Which, for me, if it's too warm a day will reduce my curls. However, come wintertime, a temperature below around 12 degrees centigrade and glycerin comes into it's own! I always use a leave in conditioner underneath when using glycerin (but lessen the amount I use) just in case a day is on the low humidity side as glycerin can dry your hair This product is going to make my curls so happy and curly on cold wet rainy days! My hair is fine, bleached, dense, and 2B. It gets weighed down very easily and the majority of curl products are a little heavy for me. This product does NOT weigh my hair down. It's very light. So light I can actually use a mousse/foam on top of it without any issues (which isn't typical for me). My -guess- is that the majority of folks who are saying it's too heavy are over-applying (maybe because it's actually too light for them?) but truly IDK. My hair is shoulder length and I spritz 2-3 times at most, focusing on the ends. Then I scrunch lightly with wet hands. If it still looks off I apply a small amount of mousse. This is the only way I've ever been able to extend my style for more than 24 hours. The fragrance isn't especially noticeable to me, maybe slightly medicinal. But I could see it being overwhelming if your hair type/length requires more product.Claire

I'm new to curlsmith products, I was a drugstore girly till much recently and finally was insightful enough to see the worth in actually investing in good ingredients and quality products for my delicate curls. Everything I've tried from this line has been super. The only thing I took a star off was that the smell of the product … is not fresh or delicious. But I can work with that- also you can refresh your curls with this dry- but experimenting with it think I preferred it with dampening my days old curls with spritz or water and then using this product with that as my hair is low porosity so spraying this on it dry seemed to not absorb and can leave a cast- but knowing my hair and knowing this can work either way this method gave me great results using it with some water in the mix. I would buy this again definitely because I only have one wash day a week unless my hair just looks unruly and unfixable, this gets the job done with a spray bottle of water and spritz's of this and my curls look good as new for the second half of the week. i like the product for added moisture to my natural type 4 hair. it is sticky but you can reduce the stickiness and drying time with mousse or applying hair gel the following day.BROWN

This defines and elongates my hair very well and a little goes a long way. unfortunately my hair does not dry soft with this product. I only used this product and did not follow it up with an oil or cream. If you're type 4c hair you may need to pair this with another moisturizer for softness

I have long, fine, curly hair that can be a bit unruly and loves to frizz out in the summer humidity. I try to wash it only two times a week so I was excited to try the curl reactivator to see if it helps revive my curls. It works great in tandem with other curl products like the curl mousse. However, if it's the sole product you are using on your hair I will say that it's not enough to combat frizz, for me at least. That being said, it definitely does what says, it revives curls, especially ones that are 2+ days old. It doesn't weigh down the hair and make it greasy. My hair feels really soft after using. I really love the curl line and I'm glad I have this product in my arsenal.Kymber

Really nice lightweight product that is perfect for wave/curl touch ups. If I’m honest, this isn’t too much different in performance to a watered down hair conditioner, but I love the convenience and that they got the ratio right. I have thinning hair and I love that this product doesn’t weigh my hair down or make it oily/greasy at all. To get the most out of this product, I like to slightly dampen with water and then go in with this. Not necessary to take that added step, but it helps stretch out the product more. It has a nice light scent that doesn’t overpower any fragrance you decide to wear that day. Also a huge plus in my book!betablinx85

I got this at the store today because I am trying to embrace my wavy hair for the summer and put less heat on it. I originally went to get the lightweight curl cream and figured I would get both. I tried this today on day 2 hair and I’m pretty impressed. It reformed my curls and took the frizz away. The only reason I deducted a star is because I felt like I needed to spray my hair with water to get the full effect. I was hoping this alone would do the trick. I will still continue to use this though and maybe on day 3,4,5 I can use without water. I have hair extensions as well and it works on them too. I have fine hair and so far I don’t think it’s made my hair greasy. Good product if you’re staring to embrace your natural hair like me.ajb5146

Of all of the curling creams I have tried this is by far my favorite! It does a good job at defining my curls and holding them into place. It also works really well when I want to do a twist out. I love the fact that it does not make my hair feel too hard and it smells delightful! To top it all off it only cost around 7 or 8 bucks! I ridiculously love this product. The smell is the best smell I have ever had on my hair. There is one product I use reluctantly because the smell is atrocious, but it works well, but this product is PERFECTION. My tangled hair detangles immediately and I only wish the smell would last all day long OR that they'd make more products with this smell.

I have 4a/4c hair. I've used this product twice. So, it doesn't readily absorb into my hair. I applied it by finger raking it through soaking wet hair in the shower. And this is the only product I used after thoroughly rinsing my conditioner. However, after allowing my hair to set for 2 hours I blow dried it and the product sunk into my hair without a problem. I got super defined soft coils with effortless volume which I love. My biggest issue with this product is that something in the ingredients irritates my scalp. I'm sitting here trying to focus on studying, but my scalp is itchy, and I don't have time to do my hair again right now. So I will have to return this to the store. I'm quite disappointed as the price point, quantity, and performance are pretty satisfactory. Oh well. Back to the drawing board.Nilajah

To start with, the smell is amazing! I love getting little whiffs of my hair as I move my head or the wind blows. I want to order other Cantu Avocado products from this smell alone! Equally important is how it moistens and defines my curly hair. I put it on soaking wet hair and let it do its magic! I’ve bought the non-avocado version of this before, and I love both. I haven’t really noticed a difference between the products, but have been using it for maybe a year and plan to continue. I have been searching for a line of products to enhance my natural wavy/curly hair. I am a Cancer patient and lost all of my hair. Over the years prior to my Cancer as many of us I tried different products and processes that left my hair damaged. However, once my hair returned it came in curly and wavy like I was born with and I wanted to keep it healthy and natural. But, I couldn't fine the right product to use. I have spent a small fortune trying out different products. But, now I believe I have found what I need. I have only been using this line of products for a short time…but, the results are AMAZING!Plum

I realize I'm an outlier, but… although I didn't find Sublime Curl to be overly heavy or unacceptable, either I wasn't doing something correctly (like using too much or too little?) or my gray curly hair just doesn't like it. In general I'm not a big fan of additional products because they seem to dry my hair out and leave it looking dirty rather than having any appearing shiny and healthy. So while it did help define the curls a bit, it's not something I think I'd try again unless I discover the key to get the results I'd like. I use matching the Furterer matching shampoo and conditioner and have found those to be the best products yet for my curly hair, so was surprised when this wasn't also a revelation.Judyk

I haven't used gel in my hair in years, as it brings back horrible high school memories of flaking and dry frizzy hair, ha ha. However, I picked this up on a whim and wow! It works for my 3b curls on the top and sides of my head, but it totally shines when I put it on my 4a curls at the back of my head (kitchen). Those babies end up perfectly spiraled! This stuff has a nice, flexible hold, and adds just a bit of shine to my curls. It's not sticky while applying it, but it IS sticky while it's drying. Once it's completely dry though that feeling goes away and you're left with bouncy, touchable curls that freaking LAST. I can get a good 3 or 4 days out of my wash n' go when I use this curling jelly, which for my hair is basically a miracle. It doesn't weigh my hair down and build up is actually fairly minimal. Love this product, can't reccomend it enough!

I searched years for a product to not only curl but moisturize my natural 4c course hair love it, I started with moisturizing curl activator love it, so I decided to try the Jelly and leave in conditioner. Love it as well, the leave in conditioner works well for me together with the jelly and activator and I tried on both wet and dry hair Awesome. Also you don't need to apply a lot a quarter or less size amount will do the job. Don't put to much in hair will get flakey. Seemed like a good idea to have a combination creme and gel product when I picked this up, but my hair just didn't agree with it at all. Even when I tried to follow the directions to "seal" the ends of my curls with the product, the result was just bleh. My hair had a dried out feel to it and it got incredibly tangled with this product in it. My hair is somewhere between a 2C and 3A for curls, so maybe it just wasn't curly enough for this product to work, but I wouldn't recommend it.knk1

I have tried a million products for my curls trying to find one that does as much as possible for as low a price point as possible – I need look no further! For context, I have a variety of curl types on my head (2C at the back, 3B at the front, and everything in between), medium thickness, low-porosity/virgin hair which is cut very short and this stuff works beautifully for me. It has enough hold to define my curls and eliminate frizz but it's lightweight enough to not pull my ringlets into waves, and enough moisture to look after them for a long time – I used to wash my hair every other day because it would get frizzy, now I can go over a week sometimes and it still looks good! It does need to be applied to almost-dripping-wet hair, and it does form a cast which I know some people don't like because of the crunchy feeling but I promise you that all you gotta do is scrunch it out when it's dry and then it'll look great. I usually use my fingers to apply it evenly all over my head when my hair is still wet, then scrunch and squish the hair from the tip towards the root to further distribute the product and bring back the curls. I then dry my hair with a diffuser until it is mostly dry, then I let it air dry the rest of the way. Only when it is COMPLETELY DRY do I scrunch out the cast – I'm then left with soft, bouncy and defined curls! It took a bit of trial and error to get the amount of product required right – if you don't use enough you'll get frizz but if you use too much it can leave you looking a bit greasy – but it's so affordable it's worth the trial! Oh also, the scent is amazing and does linger for a little while which is so nice – if you don't like coconut though, this may not be for you. I'd highly recommend giving this a go though if you're styling curls on a budget.Lillk001

The price of this item is great for the results I received. Used this for a quick wash and go while I was out of town and accidentally left my other gel, and I was not disappointed. Fair warning when using it throughout my sections ot did get extremely sticky… of that feeling bothers you this nay not be down your alley. I'm a natural with 4a/4b hair that mainly does wash n goes. I wanted a gel to layer for hold that had better ingredients than eco and wetline. I planned to use this as a topper. I've experienced that this product offers great hold, it does not control frizz very well due to the light/watery consistency. I used a botanical gel underneath and I think my hair would have had more frizz control if I used it on damp hair vs. soaking wet. I feel as if my hair dried quicker while using this product (I did sit under the hooded dryer) and the application was super easy. I felt that it had slip due to the consistency. The hold that this gives is correct. I would describe it as a firm-medium. Definitely not a strong hold. And I would agree with the reviewer that said the curls need to be sculpted beforehand. This is not going to give you much definition alone. Use this for additional hold and control. Overall, I think I would purchase again and I'm interested in trying their strong hold gel.Jasmine

I love this product. After my leave-in I usually have a few tangles, but when I use this cream instead of my usual cream, it gave me the best slip and gets all the tangles out that my leave in did not attack, and I had no frizz. It cut my wash day in half. It used to take me an hour in a half to do my hair (tangles, ugh!), now it only takes 45 – 50 minutes. My curls were so hydrated and defined. I just love this product. Don't let the size of the bottle make you think you need a bigger bottle because a little is all you need…about the size of a quarter if you're doing sections (I do 4 sections) but use it according to your hair density. My hair is a thick density on the top (this was great for that) and my hair is 3C/4A. It works perfect my sista's. Try it. Also, I noticed it has shea butter in it…a major plus for moisture. My process is LCG, I have oil that I use after wash day, but I tell you with this cream, you really don't need it. I didn't. Curl Talk don't ever change the formula!Robbin-Lynn

I have type 3c/3b Hair so I am always needing a good hair gel. I do like the original gel in this curl talk line. It provides adequate hold. Once this gel was introduced, I knew I had to try it. It does have a sticky consistency. But I am sure that is what helps the gel give that extra hold. You will have a hard cast on your hair once it is dry, but u can always break the cast if u want to. This gel holds up to humidity well. My advice since it is so sticky to the touch and to avoid tangling your hair is to apply your typical styling products before hand, and add this gel at the very last. It will be easier to work through the hair and wont leave a tangles mess. This is not a good gel if you feel like refreshing or combing out your hair the next day, just cause the extra hold that it does give. This isn't necessarily a bad curl cream, but I do think it's overpriced and so I probably won't repurchase. This cream doesn't really give me any extra curl, which is the main reason I bought it, so that's a bit of a let down. It does make my hair soft though and provides some hold, so there's that. It also smells nice, not at all like pet shampoo like some people have said. More like something sweet, like a baked good, I can't quite put my finger on what it reminds me of. This cream does give a specific look, at least for me, and that's definition but with separation. If you're looking for big curl clumps this probably isn't the product for you, but if you like smaller clumps (not stringy, just smaller), you'll like this. Luckily that's the look I'm going for because I have layers, if I use a product that makes big clumps I end up looking like I barely have any hair. The best thing about this cream in my opinion is that it doesn't weigh down my very fine hair even if I use a lot of it (it comes out fast!). Not many products for curls can be used liberally on fine hair, so if your strands are fine and you like the smaller clump look this would probably be the perfect product for you!JD

The curl cream is great, it's light weight and has a very faint smell which I like. More important than the product though I would like to give a HUGE shout out to the customer service at COBIA. Immediately after I placed my order I received an email thanking me for placing the order. My product was shipped (for free!) quickly and efficiently through Canada post. The packaging was beautiful but also environmentally friendly AND COBIA included a nice little gift from me. Even though I am on the other side of the country COBIA took the time and energy to see that I was happy, they truly went above and beyond. I would definitely shop with them again and will definitely recommend them. Hopefully one day I can visit them in person in BC! Support local businesses, support COBIA 🙂

I don't understand how this product has such good reviews. I've found better drugstore products for half the price, or if I want to splurge I like devacurl touchable curls. This product left my hair stringy yet dry, and sticky. I've used products that leave a hard cast and then once you scrunch the stiffness goes away…not for this product. I also like versatile products that I can air dry, or diffuse. Don't even try diffusing with this product, it makes the stringyness ten times worse. I am on a very limited budget and I threw this product away after 3 uses (I don't think I've ever thrown product away) because I couldn't even tolerate it enough to keep it as a back up. I haven't tried the other products by this brand, but I will not buy this curl cream again.Kat

Full of moisturizing ingredients, especially oils, this cream is fairly thick so I recommend using the tiniest amount combined with A LOT of water. It will give you super soft feeling hair. I don’t know if it really “activated” my curls, I’ve used a lot of curl creams with similar results. I like the ingredient line up though and will continue to use and purchase. One thing to note, this is a protein-free formula so balance your protein/moisture accordingly. If I had one suggestion for improvement, it would be to change the packaging to a squeeze tube instead of this hard plastic bottle that makes it difficult to squeeze product out of. This is my go-to leave-in curl cream. It doesn't weigh down my medium-thickness 2b strands and it doesn't leave them in flyaway disarray either. It's easy to use TOO much, so build up slowly or emulsify in your hands with a little water before applying to wet or damp tresses. I get my best results from this cream when I apply it to my hair (avoiding the scalp) fresh from washing and plop it for a while. It leaves the sliiightest cast, which is easily scrunched out. The formula sometimes causes small breakouts on my neck, which is the reason why I award it four stars instead of five. If you're new to the wavy/curly world, consider giving this cream a try!Renzie

I have curly hair so i used to apply mielle's leave in but the scent was too strong to handle for me, so i got this cantu moisturizing cream. I was hesitated whether to try anything from cantu on my hair because u heard alot of negative feedback about it but everbody has different hair so maybe it didn't work for some people yet it did go well for others, so i wanted to give it a shot. The size of the bottle would last 5 – 6 months which is great, has a light pleasant coconut scent. I used it after shower, the texture is thick so i recommend to use it when your hair is wet and apply 2 to 3 pumps because it spreads well through hair.
